Our trip is finally over. Yesterday we drove the rest of the way from West Virginia with only a few stops. The biggest stop was the surprise trip, a scenic train ride. After touring the gift shop we got on the train for a 2 hour down and back trip with nice views of the mountains. After the train ride we drove off to eat lunch from where we drove the rest of the way home. We arrived at the scout garage right on time at about 7:00, unpacked and headed home. It was a good trip with no major mishaps or fights or anything. Everyone is now looking forward to the next trip in 3 or 4 years.

Paris Island

Yesterday we traveled the rest of the way up through Florida and Georgia and visited the Paris Island Marine Corps training base in South Carolina. Being Boy Scouts we were welcomed warmly and were given a tour of the base by a Marine. We got to see where the new recruits come in and where they train, stuff like that. unfortunately it was really hot out so we didn’t get to watch the recruits training but it was cool anyway. We visited the museum there and the went to the mess hall for a big Marine meal. Then we went to our hotel a few minutes away were we swam and ate ice cream before turning in for the night. Today is a day of driving which means 8 hours in the cars.

Upwards Journey

Today is the first day of our journey home. We are driving from Key West up to St. Augustine where we will spend the night. 8 hours of driving with only a few stops for food, gas, and restroom breaks. In the words of our Scoutmaster, “There’s nothing to look foreward to this time so the trip may be a little more difficult”, so far i don’t think it has, but it has only been 4 hours so….

One Fish Two Fish, Red Fish Blue Fish

We got up a half hour earlier today to catch our boat for fishing, even though we spent the half an hour turning around to get things people kept forgetting. Once we got on and were given our training talk we enjoyed the ride way out to sea. Over the next 4 hours we fished and fished and barfed over the railing. I caught the first and the smallest fish but not the biggest. Spencer got seasick and holds the record for barfing 14 times during the voyage. He even got a hat from the Coast Guard guys on board for not losing his cool through the whole thing. Tracy caught the most fish, about 10. Sam caught a big Hog fish and Cassie Norris caught the biggest, a 25 pound grouper. The fisherman guys cut up our fish and gave them to us to eat. So we fried them up for dinner and ate them with our tacos.

After the fishing and before dinner we loaded up the vans and drove to the southernmost point of the Continental United States. We got our picture taken and left. Now we’re pack up and getting ready for our 4 day journey back to Ohio.

Relaxing (or burning) in the Florida Sun

The end of yesterday brought a beautiful sunset and lots of sunburn. We returned to the beach yesterday evening for a little more swimming and snorkeling. When the sun sunk lower into the horizon we went to the west side of the beach and took some pictures of the setting sun. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see it actually set into the ocean on account of some clouds rolling in and the park ranger ushering us out rudely.

Today we drove over to the town and acted more like tourists. We walked into all the gift shops and enjoyed our time at the end of the road (US Hwy 1). Some of us returned to the campsite to relax and the rest stayed to shop some more. The rest of the day is resting and a little bit of swimming in the ocean by our campsite.

Key West- Day One

Today marks our first full day in the Keys. We got up this morning and loaded up for Snorkeling. We had a little bit of trouble finding the place at first and by the time we found it and got parked we had missed the boat. We decided instead to visit a beautiful beach with a nice area for snorkeling. The rest of the morning was spent in the water watching the fish and an unusual cloud-rainbow. The rest of the day is for rest and relaxation, much needed.
